The room is named after Erminia Caudana (1896-1974), a paper and parchment restorer who devoted her life to the recovery of manuscripts burned in the 1904 fire. One encounters this figure already in the three showcases outside the hall, which introduce the themes of the permanent exhibition: the historical library, the fire, and the restoration workshop.
In the hall, a video recounts events and protagonists of the early twentieth century. The visitor travels through time and is invited to look for correspondences between the period photos hanging on the walls and the original furniture, documents and tools on display. Of particular interest among these are the wet chamber, used to soften and separate burned parchment blocks, and the backlit table with slanted glass top, invented by Caudana and still used in the restoration of paper materials.
