The Vivaldi Auditorium, so named in honor of the great Venetian composer, whose main body of manuscripts existing in the world is preserved by the Library, has been completely renovated. In 1976 the Turin University Library reopened to the public in the area of the former Stables of Palazzo Carignano. In the planners’ intent, the new building placed alongside the impressive collection of printed volumes, incunabula and manuscripts a capacious lecture hall capable of accommodating more than two hundred people. The new venue, still fully in tune with an international style taste that had already shown signs of crisis in those years, was partially underground. Sober and dry, with the sole decorative concession of long aluminum chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, it was intended for meetings, presentations, and conferences strictly related to the activities of the Library, which made exclusive use of it for years.
